Synopsis: This volume investigates the role of victims and former perpetrators in the prevention of terrorism and political violence.Victims and perpetrators of violence have been the subject of significant academic research. However a particular category has suffered neglect and exclusion from this body of work: victims and perpetrators of terrorism and political violence have rarely featured in this landscape. Yet claims of victimhood are central to understanding both the experience of victimisation but also the push and pull factors that are a central part of perpetrator involvement in political violence in the first place. This project seeks to understand not only how former perpetrators and victims can work in preventing violence in a number of contexts but, more broadly, the narratives that support and oppose violence, the construction of victimisation, the politicisation of victimhood, the justifications for violence and the potential for preventing and encouraging desistance from violence. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, victimology, criminology, security studies and IR.
