Synopsis: |
An Indiana farm boy desires only to claim his corner of the family farm where he plans to build a cabin, marry his fiancee, and tend his own fields, but news of the war reaches Greene County in April 1861 and the governor calls for volunteers. His best friend pressures him to join, but Carey passes because he is needed on the farm. Little Sarah and her mother, friends of Carey's late mother, have fallen on hard times so his father offers shelter for them. Sarah grows fond of Carey, though she keeps this quiet. As summer ends, his best friend implores him to volunteer. Now even his fiancee pushes him to join. The only one to object is little Sarah. He is taken by patriotic fervor and joins the war. He campaigns along the Mississippi River and survives three long years. He wins furlough and returns to his beloved farm only to discover how brutal times can make a man close himself off from the things he loves. Love always finds a way, he discovers. As his reprieve ends, returning to war is especially wrenching. |
