Synopsis: |
Love of the flesh contends with love of country in this modern reworking of Marlowe's tragic tale of the effeminate and ineffectual king of England. After taking the throne, Edward lavishes his royal favors and affections on his homosexual lover, infuriating his wife and enraging his court. When his lover is banished, Edward, blinded by passion, ignores the external forces threatening England and forsakes his royal duties-which ultimately costs him his throne and his life. Tal Lostracco's Edward II boldly portrays the sexual and political subtexts of Marlowe's 16th century play, giving new life and relevance to this classic and often overlooked work by one of Shakespeare's contemporaries. |
