Synopsis: |
For years past I had regarded a general war in Europe as an eventual certainty. The experience which I gained during the seven or eight years spent as a member of the Committee of Imperial Defence, and my three years tenure of the Office of Chief of the General Staff, greatly strengthened this conviction. Excerpt: The vital element of the problem was speed in mobilisation and concentration, change of plans meant inevitable and possibly fatal delay. Murray, Wilson, Grierson and Huguet concurred in my views, and it was so settled. The date of the embarkment of the Headquarters Staff was fixed for Friday, August 14th. During the fateful days which intervened, daily and almost hourly reports reached us as to the progress of mobilisation both of our Allies and our Enemies. From the first it became quite evident that the German system of mobilisation was quicker than the French. There was reason to believe that Germany had partly mobilised some classes of her reserves before formal mobilisation. |
