Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people struggle to be accommodated in Russia and other post-Soviet states, where recently there has been an increase in homophobic violence, and the introduction of laws restricting their rights. This book explores how this situation has come about. It discusses how meanings attached to non-heteronormative sexualities have tended to be constructed by political elites for specific purposes and have had to comply with Marxist-Leninist or nationalist thinking, explores how attitudes to non-normative sexualities developed historically, and examines the current position in a range of post-Soviet states including Central Asia and the Baltic states. Overall the book provided a wealth of detail on this understudied subject, and assesses how current attitudes are changing. |
