Description: |
When a lawyer at Google starts asking questions that her search engine can't answer, she embarks on a series of spiritual misadventures into alternative religious practices, from Burning Man to Laughing Yoga. |
Synopsis: |
One woman's search for spirituality and the meaning of life. Born to Indian parents and raised in the US, culturally Hindu and practicing Jainism, Anjali Kumar attended Catholic schools then studied bioethics at Brown University, earned a law degree, and married a Hindu interventional cardiologist. Convinced that the traditional religions she had been exposed to over the course of her life were not the only options or a perfect fit for her, and driven by the new obligation she felt as a mother to answer life's biggest questions, Kumar set out to see if there was more-or better-and nothing was off limits or too unorthodox. Looking for God and a route to spiritual enlightenment turned into an epic journey of self-discovery. Kumar headed to the Amazon rainforest to learn from the ancient practices of shamans, attended the techie haunt of Burning Man, practiced Buddhist and transcendental meditation, tried convening with angels, visited saints, goddesses and faith healers, attempted Tantric Sound Healing, studied the divine feminine, engaged a psychic to conduct distance healing via the Internet, went to SoulCycle, joined a laughing yoga group and even dabbled in pole dancing.Traversing the spiritual landscape took her not only to the far corners of the religious and metaphysical world, but also to the far corners of the globe as well. In her quest to find a spiritual home she traveled to Malaysia, India, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brazil, Peru, Norway, and Mexico. FROM GOOGLE TO GOD is a provocative and empowering look at the timeless and vexing issues of spirituality at a time when more and more people are walking away from formal religions. Written with humor and respect, FROM GOOGLE TO GOD offers an honest and frank first-person account of some of the less than mainstream religious and spiritual practices that are followed by millions of people in the world today. |
