Portugal was an early member of the EU, joining the European Community in 1986. It has a population of about 10.5 million. Its ethnic groups include: homogeneous Mediterranean stock and citizens of African descent who immigrated to mainland during decolonization who number less than 100,000. Since 1990, East Europeans have entered Portugal. Its exports include: clothing and footwear, machinery, chemicals, cork and paper products, and hides. Its EU export partners include: Spain, France, Germany, UK, Italy, and Belgium. Its imports cover: machinery and transport equipment, chemicals, petroleum, textiles, and agricultural products.
