This fascinating selection of photographs shows how Salford Quays and neighbouring areas have changed dramatically over the years. |
Synopsis: |
Salford is separated from neighbouring Manchester by the River Irwell the River Irwell. It has a long independent history and was home to the docks area opened in 1894 as the terminus of the Manchester Ship Canal. The docks slowly declined after the Second World War, but have been regenerated, first as Salford Quays and then as Media City (with the arrival of the BBC). The dock basins and other features remain but are now surrounded by housing, shops, and the Lowry Centre. In the midst of now demolished dense terraced housing there is also the oddity of the medieval Ordsall Hall. Alongside the buildings, the old and new generations of trams carried (and still carry) the city dwellers and workers to and from the docks and quays. In this book local author Paul Hindle shows the huge changes that have taken place at Salford Quays and the neighbouring areas of Ordsall and Weaste over the years in a fascinating selection of `then and now' photographs. |
