Synopsis: |
This visual delight traces the life and art of Stephen Pace from his boyhood on farms in Indiana and Missouri through the Normandy landings in WW II and study on the G.I. Bill in Mexico, Paris and New York, to the forceful abstract expressionist canvases he painted as a highly visible member of the New York School, and finally to the luminous representational paintings of recent decades. In the latter he focuses alternately on the recollections of Depression era farm life and vignettes of coastal Maine where he has spent summers for half a century. This monograph celebrates Pace's radiant colour and agile capacity to distil the essence of a subject in succinct and telling strokes. Critical and biographical text summarizes Pace's work in the context of the electrifying period during which American art came of age. |
