Description: |
This work explores various African religions as part of a cultural system and as relevant to national identity on the island of Trinidad. It describes the evolution of the Shango Cult into the Orisha movement and its role in the more popular art form of calypso. |
Synopsis: |
When the author began her anthropological research on what was then called the Shango Cult in Trinidad in the 1950s, religious practices of this kind were despised and generally considered the devil[trademark]s work. Today, African-derived religions are officially recognized, their holidays are celebrated in public and play a central role in Trinidad[trademark]s popular culture, from calypso performances to carnival. This book explores various African religions as part of a cultural system and as relevant to national identity on the island of Trinidad. Professor Frances Henry eruditely and intimately analyzes the changes in religion in their socio-political context. The author describes the evolution of the Shango Cult into the Orisha movement and its role in the more popular art form of calypso. Dr. Henry admits that she is a strong advocate for the legitimization of these religious groups in Trinidad, and her status as an elder[trademark] and her relationship with the revered King of Shango in Trinidad, Pa Neezer, afford her a uniquely intimate perspective that contributes to the authoritative nature of this text. This book fills a void in the documented history of Caribbean culture and religion. |
