In 1557, Jesuits arrived in Ethiopia, and in 1612 King Susenyos converted to Catholicism and attempted to force the Ethiopian orthodoxy to follow, resulting in decades of revolts. After his death in 1632, his son banished the Jesuits from the kingdom. The Jesuits sent detailed letters to Rome; these are breathtaking primary sources about the political power structure, religions, culture, and country of this time and region. This translation from Latin, with introductions and commentary, makes these portraits of Ethiopia available in English for the first time. |
