Description: |
These little known teachings of Jesus from the Gospel of Thomas, the "Book ofQ" and other lost sources offer a radical message of spiritual awakening. |
Synopsis: |
This is a daily prayer book that features a quote from Jesus at the top of each page. The quotes have been freshly translated so jesus' voice sounds contemporary and they have been drawn from numerous sources so they are more varied than just those sayings in the Bible. Each quote is followed by a short commentary from the author. His interpretations are wide-ranging and thought-provoking; he's ecumenical and contemporary. In a natural way, the author connects Jesus' words to the world's great religious traditions (Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism) and famous religious thinkers (Ghandi, the Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King Jr., Kierkegaard). The author also relates these spiritual thoughts to the stuff of modern life (cell phones, the internet, TV news) while talking about timeless themes like attachment, desire, pain, arrogance, compassion and seeking. The author's commentaries are economical and intelligent. Generally just 20 to 40 words long, they are truly little gems. Finally, the short prayer. This is where the book becomes personal and applies to the reader's daily life: as a meditation, a starting point for conversation with God, or a way of taking the lesson and using it for that day. |
