In the United States, people of all different backgrounds live together in a land of rich diversity. Today, more than one in eight people in the United States are Hispanic, and Latino communities are an important part of America's cultural fabric. The Hispanic American people are also diverse, made up of people from different lands, cultures, and backgrounds. In the midst of this diversity, however, they share some things in common. One of the most important is their faith. Latinos may be Catholic or Protestant, or they may belong to the Jewish or Muslim faiths; some practice Santeria, a religion that has its roots in Africa. Despite these differences, Hispanic Americans all tend to have an intense and living response to religion. They do not separate their spiritual beliefs in a category apart from their ordinary, everyday lives. Instead, they live out their faith in tangible ways, and they reach out to one another and to the spiritual world with an ongoing sense of love and wonder.
