Synopsis: |
As a member of the 7th Armoured Division - the legendary 'Desert Rats' - Ray Harris served in all the major campaigns of World War II in Africa and Italy. He also participated in the renowned D-Day landings in Normandy and the Allied occupation of Hamburg. However, as well as an outstanding soldier, he was also the producer and comedian with "The Jerboa Strollers" concert party. With jokes and songs, he lifted his comrades' spirits in settings as diverse as the open desert to The Garrison Opera House, Abbassia. Working with Jasper Maskelyne and later E.N.S.A. Ray also corresponded with Max Miller. His story is told through photographs, theatre memorabilia and the ardent but upbeat letters he wrote to Doreen Sellman - his fiancee then wife - throughout their long years of separation. Ray Harris - A Desert Rat Entertains reveals both the imperturbable spirit of a remarkable man and a truly poignant wartime love story. |
