Description: Field guide to the features of these oceanic island volcanoes, linked to a volcanic mantle hotspot away from plate boundaries with volcanic sequences uplifted to form the islands; sub-aerial shield volcanoes that are currently active and post-erosional volcanic rocks.
Synopsis: The Canary Islands display all the features of active ocean island volcanoes. Their origin is linked to a hot spot or plume that causes anomalously hot mantle material to intrude the African plate. The islands are dominated by basaltic rocks, which include submarine volcanic sequences uplifted inside the islands, sub-aerial shield volcanoes, and the remains of giant lateral collapses. Tenerife and Gran Canaria also display extensive pyroclastic deposits. Active volcanoes comprise shield-stage volcanism in the west of the archipelago (El Hierro and La Palma), and post-erosional volcanic cinter cones and lava fields in the East (Lanzarote and Gran Canaria). Teide on Tenerife, in the center of the island chain, is the emblematic volcano of the Canaries, towering over the archipelago at over 3,700 meters. For these reasons, the islands make a spectacular destination for volcanological field trips and geological excursions, and they offer a deep and thorough insight into volcanic processes and ocean island evolution. This clearly written and richly color-illustrated introduction and field guide provides a concise overview of the geology and volcanology of the Canary Islands, and it offers 22 carefully planned day excursions comprising trips on all of the islands. Each stop includes a description of how to approach a site, and where to park, with GPS locations provided. The book will be essential reading for geologists who visit the Canary Islands, one of the largest and most fascinating active volcanic systems in Europe.
