Description: |
This timely new book explores the changing role of intellectuals and cultural workers in society. Tomlinson assesses contemporary culture by looking at its historical context, explaining how and why cultural didactism has declined. Written by a well respected academic, it will be key reading for students of cultural studies and sociology. |
Synopsis: |
In the wake of the global financial crisis there has been a more urgent focus not only on de-regulation in political and economic terms but also in terms of the cultural and ethical underpinning of the society we live in. In his new book, Tomlinson assesses this apparent crisis in contemporary culture by setting the debate within in its historical context. The book explores the history of institutional and cultural life in the West from the early part of the twentieth century to the present. Tomlinson argues that cultural didacticism plays a key role in the early construction of modern secular public values but begins to collapse in the twentieth century. Understanding the causes of that collapse help us to understand the cultural predicament we face today. Clearly structured and packed with interesting cultural examples, the book will be key reading for students and researchers in cultural studies and sociology. |
