Synopsis: |
This 45-minute TV-quality video illustrates each stage of the actual process of making a manuscript as it might have been done on the Continent in the thirteenth century, using replica presses and tools whenever possible. The DVD also includes an annotated PowerPoint(TM) demonstration that supplements the video and is an ideal teaching tool. Included in the video are sequences showing the pricking and ruling of the vellum, the sewing of the individual gatherings to the binding thongs, the stitching of the head- and tail-bands, the reinforcing of the spine, the preparation and attaching of the cover boards to the text block, the insertion of the pastedowns, and the skiving and attaching of the quarter binding. The spine and inner cover have cut-away panels so that details of the binding process that are normally concealed from the reader may be examined, making the video an ideal teaching tool. The binding was done by John Stinson, who has collaborated with Evellum on a number of projects. This PAL version is for use in UK, Europe and ROW. An NSTC DVD version for North America is also available - 9780980286205. |
