Synopsis: John Gay (1685-1732) was a dramatist and poet, best-known today for writing The Beggar's Opera (1728). This satirical work was both innovative and hugely successful, though its cariacature of Sir Robert Walpole almost certainly led to the censorship of Gay's later work. This biography situates Gay's life and work in the context of his times. Through his membership of the Scriblerus Club, Gay developed lasting friendships with Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift and John Arbuthnot, all of whom influenced his writing. The study will be invaluable to scholars of eighteenth-century literature and political history.
