Description: |
Text and facing translation of an unjustly neglected thirteenth-century German Arthurian romance. |
Synopsis: |
Gauriel von Muntabel, by Konrad von Stoffeln, dates from the late thirteenth century; it offers much evidence for literary reception in the middle ages from the prominent part which it accords to the heroes of earlier romances, such as Hartmann von Aue's Erec, its several references to characters from contemporary authors, including Wirnt von Grafenberg, and its thematic relationship to works like Marie de France's Lanval. The facing text and translation are accompanied by an introduction to the work, addressing in particular the divergent manuscript tradition and the role that this has played in the reception of the romance; it also offers readers an interpretative context informed by newer scholarship on the 'post-classical' Middle High German Arthurian writers. The volume is completed with an index of proper names and bibliography. |
