Synopsis: Whether or not you read "Valley of Stone", you will want to read this continuing tale of the Evans, Birkett, and Williams families set in the Langdale Valley in the English Lake District, from 1922 to 1946. It takes us through the bad times after the First World War, through the depression, into the Second World War. The local quarries and gunpowder works struggle to survive, as do the occupants of the valley, and we leave behind some of the well loved characters, and our remaining family members meet new acquaintances, who arrive in the valley, including evacuees and prisoners of war, as many young people are forced to leave. During this time of wartime austerity, the men left at home form the Local Defense Volunteers, and together with the women they try to keep things going, dealing with plane crashes, local tragedies, and some happy events. The pragmatic outlook of those left behind is appreciated, when very little moves forward as expected. One character fights serious illness, but does find that if you do not give in at the first obstacle, then the quality of life can be vastly enhanced, and the future can look very promising.
