Margaret Oliphant (1828-97) was a remarkable Victorian lady who, despite the difficulties of looking after her widowed brother's children as well as her own, found time to write over a hundred novels and other works of travel and history. 'Jerusalem', first published in 1891, provides a fascinating account of the history of the 'City of Peace'. As the author related in her introduction: 'The Story of Jerusalem is one of the most wonderful in the world, besides being of unparalleled importance to the human race.
