Hospital admission does not necessarily mean that a patient is given appropriate treatment, and professionals working with this group need to be aware of the procedures and possible pitfalls in the provision of hospital care. Using case studies, selected and analyzed by carers and sufferers, the author argues that continuity of care is not always maintained, and a patient's diagnosis may even change post-admission, with medical teams filing to take into account a patient's previous medical history, or the experience of families and friends. The final chapter highlights the key issues post-admission and makes suggestions for improving the hospital treatment and care of people with serious mental illness. |
