Description: |
This book examines the dynamic role that language plays as a unifying factor in maintaining and reinforcing national identity in Central and Eastern Europe in the post-communist period when new nation states were formed. It covers linguistic identity, linguistic exclusion or inclusion, languages in contact and languages in conflict. |
Synopsis: |
The two colloquia which form this publication focus on a geographical area - Central and Eastern Europe. Four scholars address current issues in Eastern Europe. This area of the world is particularly interesting since, in the post-communist period, at the time of the formation of the new nation states, we are able to witness the dynamic role that language plays as a unifying factor in maintaining and reinforcing national identity. Questions of linguistic identity, of linguistic exclusion or inclusion, of languages in contact, of languages in conflict, of language purity, of languages in conservation, of language prestige, are all central to the process. The contributors are prominent academics in their own countries and close to the political process either as advisors to, or members of, the new administration. |
