Synopsis: |
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) was the founder of English moral and political philosophy. "Opera Philosophica" (Philosophical Works), first published in 1839-45, collects all of Hobbes's major philosphical works in Latin - the language that he, for the most part, first wrote in. These Latin texts thus provide the truest path to Hobbes' philosophy as he originally conceived it, before later translations and interpretations. Often differing significantly from the English editions, the "Opera Philosophica" also throw light on the developments Hobbes made in his lifetime. Edited by the politician Sir William Molesworth, who also edited the English Works, "Opera Philosophica" is a source material for study of Hobbes. To this 19th-century text is added a new introduction by G.A.J. Rogers. |
