Complementing Volume VII of the series, which covers the same years and contains documentation from various archives, this work presents the information contained in the announcements of popular entertainments which appeared in the "Diaro de Madrid" from its foundation in 1758. Many of the performances mentioned in Volume VII are fleshed out, to produce a detailed panorama of popular entertainments over a period of almost a century. Many of the entertainments were new or had recently been developed - peepshows, the cosmorama, advanced magic lanterns, the phantasmagoria, shadow-puppets, the circus - and many were introduced by foreigners, but genuinely Spanish subjects and traditions survived. The background to these entertainments is Spain in evolution from the Enlightenment to the rise of liberalism. |
