Synopsis: |
"Being a Bishop in Scotland" is a title that well says what this book is about. We are given a fascinating insight into the thoughts and experiences of a Scottish bishop who writes frankly and humorously as he tells us his story. The book is selectively autobiographical but much more than an autobiography. Bishop Taylor gives us some glimpses into his life as a soldier in World War II, a seminarian in Rome, a seminary lecturer in Scotland, a rector in Spain and a parish priest in Scotland as well as a very revealing account of himself and his work as a bishop in Scotland. Maurice Taylor has also had many international contacts. We are given his story of violence, injustice and poverty in Latin America and his account, as a former chairman of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, of the treatment meted out by officials of the Roman Curia to that body and, indirectly, to the bishops' conferences of the English-speaking world. This is a readable and unstuffy account of what "Being a Bishop in Scotland" has meant to a man who, as his episcopal motto, chose the text 'Walk in God's Presence'. |
