Description: |
Artist Byron Dawson drew and painted a wealth of evocative images of Newcastle upon Tyne between 1925 and 1939, many of which were published in the local newspapers of the time. Art historian and author Marshall Hall rediscovers Dawson's work and brings a vanished Tyneside back to life. |
Synopsis: |
Take a step back in time to a Newcastle you've never seen before, thanks to the forgotten drawings and paintings of the era's most famous local artist, Byron Dawson. In the uncertain days between the General Strike of 1926 and the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Dawson drew just about every building, street scene, and place of entertainment in the city, capturing them in a way that has never been done so comprehensively before or since. Art historian and author Marshall Hall has made this fascinating selection and provided vivid descriptions of what the artist saw then and how the city has changed to face the 21st century. He also recounts the life story of this reclusive recorder of Tyneside scenes. Ray Marshall, of the Evening Chronicle's 'Remember When' series, introduces the art that brings Newcastle of the 1920s and 1930s to life. |
