Synopsis: "Exploring Cumbrian History" would seem to be the next natural step in the "Exploring" series of books, as it means that the whole of the very north of England has now been covered. Cumbria is a large county formed from the old counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, part of North Lancashire and part of North Yorkshire. Today it also contains the Lake District National Park, which was formed in 1951 and is the largest in Britain. Cumbria is bordered on the south by Lancashire, on the east by Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland and on the north by Scotland, and the western border is the Irish Sea. The county has an absolute wealth of history, being the home of many well-known sites, people and events, many of which are unique, and also the home of some that are less well known. Early settlers left their mark on the county and there are several stone circles, such as Castlerigg and Gamelands, and many fascinating ancient camp remains, such as King Arthur's Round Table near Penrith, which stand as testaments to their presence. The Romans settled in the area and left some unique sites and remains, including bathhouses, a bridge and several impressive forts such as the spectacular remains at the top of Hardknott Pass. Saxon and Viking remains include the famous cross and church at Bewcastle. The rich variety of churches built throughout the county demand further investigation as no two of them are the same, every one of them has something special and unique to offer visitors. And, of course, the area's priories, abbeys and churches reflect the struggle between the Celtic and Roman beliefs of those early days. Magnificent castles, such as Brough Castle, Penrith and Pendragon Castles dominate the landscape, as do the many towers and fortified houses which stand as reminders of Cumbria's involvement in the bloody Border Wars. Fishing and farming also have a great and rich history in the county; there are over 3 million sheep in Cumbria and fishing has been a very important industry for many years, along with iron ore, slate, lead and gypsum mining.Notable inhabitants like Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth and Lady Anne Clifford have all left their marks on the history of the county, while today modern subjects such as the nuclear power station at Sellafield bring the county's story into the 20th century. Carlisle, of course, has a long and varied history. It developed as a crucial border city from early days, and its crucial location in Britain has seen it bear the brunt of much violence and many battles, and yet the city's cathedral is one of the most peaceful and tranquil religious buildings in the country. The position of Carlisle has also allowed it to use the advantages of the Industrial Revolution to aid its development into a modern and vibrant border city. I have always found Cumbria intriguing, with its rich tapestry of historical subject matter woven against the background of wonderfully varied landscape it cannot fail to inspire. My enthusiasm for the county was fired by my own Cumbrian relatives from both sides of my family and their passion for this very special and endlessly fascinating area.
