Synopsis: This title covers 50 memorable matches stretching back as far as 1900 and continuing throughout the 20th century up until more recent times, selected by the author. It brings to life key matches in the history of one of Britain's most cherished football clubs. Choosing these 50 matches has been enjoyable, and though some readers might not agree with this selection I have tried to be as discerning as possible and have attempted to maintain a situation where a majority of older Millwall supporters, and those a bit younger will have cause to remember most of these matches. Within, it records one of Millwall's best away victories over Tottenham in 1900 and the equally outstanding result in 1929 against the same opposition. The same decade saw the superb performances at Bradford City, a game that was threatened by a snow storm and the Lions only victory so far over Manchester United. Following hostilities the game many old-timers like to recall is the defeat of mighty Newcastle United in 1957 in which Millwall, against all odds won through. There are two classic encounters with Port Vale at The Den in 1958 and 1962, but the 1960 clash with Chester was drifting aimlessly along until a six-goal burst in the last 20 minutes or so, gave the game a totally false impression. Concluding the "Swinging Sixties" are three matches against Middlesbrough, Carlisle United and Sheffield United went to show how much Millwall's vociferous crowd could influence the outcome of game by their unremitting backing. The high-scoring 5-4 defeat at Exeter in 1981 came in a period of flux for the Lions as they struggled to find consistency. But by 1988 they had arrived at the top table, and duly won their initial First Division home game against Derby County. Later that season came the memorable and unforgettable televised classic against Norwich City. When the move to new ground occurred in 1993 Millwall reached a level that even their most optimistic fan never thought the Lions would aspire to. The New Den would witness five Divisional Play-offs, a fine run that would eventually see Millwall reach their first FA Cup Final in 2004 and their first-ever foray into European football against Ferencvaros. The 'Mother's Day' massacre of West Ham United and latterly the Titanic struggles with Leeds United. An added bonus was the two Wembley appearances in 2009 and 2010. All in all, following the Lions over three decades has been a roller coaster ride that has not only excited but also brought despair. Nonetheless, it illustrates what a great and unique football club Millwall are.
