It later developed as a centre for milling, fishing, shipbuilding and coastal trade. By the 18th century Emsworth was a thriving port. Generations of Emsworth families earned their livings as fishermen, boat builders, sail and rope makers, or as seamen on vessels engaged in trade. The Emsworth oyster had national renown for its flavour during the 19th century. Emsworth's heritage is still in evidence: mill buildings have been converted to new uses and the two millponds have been preserved. Efforts are being made to restore the Terror, an Emsworth fishing boat built in the 19th century.
