Description: |
Summarising messages from existing research and practice, this report outlines the current situation on access to short breaks by Black disabled children and their families. It also provides examples of what can work, drawing on new survey and interview material from short break schemes. |
Synopsis: |
Current government policy supports short breaks for disabled children, and the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 requires public services to promote racial equality. However, Black disabled children are under-represented in short break services and their families face barriers to access to, and choice within them. Services therefore need to actively practice inclusion to avoid colluding with institutional racism. Summarising messages from existing research and practice, this report outlines the current situation on access to short breaks by Black disabled children and their families. It also provides examples of what can work, drawing on new survey and interview material from short break schemes. This book is aimed at practitioners, policy makers, academics and all those who wish to see improved services for Black disabled children and their families. |
