Synopsis: |
While the Labour government has initiated policies to address growing concerns regarding the spillover effects of work on family life, little is known about the effects on family life of self-employment among ethnic minorities, despite the higher incidence of self-employment among them. This report redresses this neglect by examining work-life balance issues in family-run minority ethnic businesses. The report investigates the changing patterns of family involvement in business and their effects on family life in minority ethnic-owned businesses by conducting in-depth interviews with 60 male entrepreneurs and 19 other family members from five different minority ethnic communities in South East England. The report covers new ground by: focusing on the self-employed and those working in family businesses; comparing the relationship between family and work over time, at start-up and with business development, and at successive stages of the family life cycle; comparing differences in family involvement and attitudes to work and family life across different minority ethnic groups, between small and large businesses and traditional and knowledge-intensive sectors. This report will be of interest to policy and support organisations interested in promoting entrepreneurship and work-life balance; and also researchers since it offers insights into the impact of entrepreneurship on family life. It will also interest minority ethnic entrepreneurs and family businesses since it highlights work-life balance issues as the business develops. |
