| Synopsis: |
Sachs was a physician and psychiatrist who wanted to learn whether psychoanalysis was applicable across different cultures. For two and a half years, from 1933, Sachs used free association in his psychoanalysis of "John Chavafambira", a Manyika healer-diviner who was living in a Johannesburg slum and was eager to learn the methods of European medicine. The result is "Black Hamlet" - a narrative, even novelistic, reconstruction of one black South African's life set against the background of two worlds in collision. |
