Synopsis: |
When the Corcoran Gallery of Art opened in 1869 it was the first art museum to be established in the US capital. The gallery has continued to break new artistic ground by following a policy of acquiring works by both well-known and emerging artists, from John Singer Sargent to Kerry James Marshall. In the autumn of 2003, work started on the construction of a new Gallery wing, designed by Frank Gehry (Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao). A Capital Collection has been published as a celebration of the Gehry wing and to support a major series of travelling exhibitions. This highly illustrated publication features over 100 of the Corcoran's masterworks, organised by theme: Identity, Narrative Nature, History and Imagination. Introductory texts to each thematic chapter have been written by leading art critic, Eleanor Heartney, and provide vital contextual information for the art that follows. Works included range from Childe Hassam's, Aux Grand Prix de Paris, to Andres Serrano's, Madonna and Child. Guest authors include Frank Gehry, Bell Hooks, Angus Phillips of the Washington Post and congressman, John Lewis. |
