Description: |
The moral preoccupations of 18th-century Scots have not received the attention that they deserve. This study takes the concept of virtuous discourse as its focus, and uses this as a tool to examine Scottish culture as represented in a variety of discourse types: periodicals, sermons, newspapers, journals, novels and works of philosophy. |
Synopsis: |
A wide sample of texts and thinkers is drawn upon in order to create a full and detailed picture of how ethical vocabulary was used by the literati of late eighteenth-century Scotland. The focus of attention is therefore shifted away from such traditional perspectives as the Scottish contribution to the disciplines of sociology and economics, and onto areas of life and culture that have hitherto received little attention: reflections on private and domestic life; the construction of adolescence; theories of the nature of women. |
