After the jubilation of the street parties and the partial demobilisation of our fighting troops, the whole world, which included our Empire and US allies, were astounded when the electors of the UK deposed our Wartime Leader to Victory, Winston Churchill, and substituted a Labour controlled government in 1945. The shock to the United States was not highlighted at the time but when the action was analysed, they feared in their own country a backlash of workers' rights and felt that similar actions would sweep across the USA.A country worthy of heroes was promised and did not follow after 1945. What followed were nine years of rationing and making do with patchwork clothing, furnishings and low standards of housing. No replacement housing was on the horizon and high rise flats loomed as a way ahead with little enthusiasm by those delegated to live in them as the vacancies appeared. It also marked the start of the Nationalisation of all the commodities, the railways, mines, electricity and the health service. |
