Synopsis: |
This book is based on the author's experiences when he was living in Cuba to perfect his Spanish. Although much of it is light-hearted in tone, it provides great insight into the way of life of the ordinary Cubans with whom he lived, while at the same time giving a balanced perspective of the reality of this culture and providing good advice for anyone intending to visit the island. The author also describes some of the political intrigue surrounding the country and shares his thoughts on Fidel Castro and the anti-American establishment. Throughout the book there is a sense that the Cuban people do not experience the personal freedom that we have in the West but, despite this, their happiness, singing, laughter and close family ties show that they have learnt to how accept this as the norm, not to be questioned openly. The author learns much from his close contact with the people, and along the way his fascinating voyage of discovery becomes a voyage of self-discovery and self-development too. (Note that part of the book takes the form of a fictional story in order to protect the identities of some of the people involved). |
