Synopsis: |
The estate Welshman William Jones built at Orrel was his second, and much more diverse in its concept, architecture and sizes of dwellings than his initial attempt at Irlam Road-Marsh Lane. Jones not only built the houses but manufactured the bricks and tiles in his own kilns and provided the first electric lighting in domestic properties and streets anywhere in the country all at his own expense. Although remaining relatively unscathed from damage in WW2 in comparison to some parts of the old Borough of Bootle; nevertheless there was tragedy in the loss of life and damage to buildings and also extreme bravery shown by the locals during Blitzes of 1940/41. With the houses came more and more industries and more and more tenants. There were also retail businesses in the shopping parade along Hawthorne Road and small home grown businesses such as fruit sellers, window cleaners, painters and decorators. Many of the photographs contained in this book are from family albums, local historians and the drawings are computer generated from photographs taken by the project team.To accompany this volume the Klondyke Residents Association have produced a DVD containing further video and still photographs overlaid with the oral memories of a number of elderly residents. |
