Synopsis: |
Celebrated as the man who wrote an entire novel (translated as A Void) without using the letter 'e', and another in the form of a vast jigsaw puzzle, Georges Perec was a leading exponent of French literary experiment, who found humour - and pathos - in the human need for arrangement and classification. Thoughts of Sorts is itself an unclassifiable collection of philosophical riffs on his obsessions with puzzles, lists, catalogues and taxonomies. These essays explore the ruses by which we find a place in the world, and the book ends characteristically with a question mark. Is thinking a kind of sorting? Is sorting a kind of thought? Whether Perec is detailing his thoughts on the verb 'to live' or describing how he organises his desk the reader will be continually charmed and fascinated by his intelligence and humour. Previously unpublished in England, it is here introduced by one of our best known novelists, Perec enthusiast Margaret Drabble. |
