Description: Cirrus Clouds is a collection of travel poetry with a human justice focus. Gill Hague's collection grows out of this metaphor of clouds transporting real-life experiences from countries around the world including India, Brazil, and Greece, Malaysia, the US, Uganda, South Africa and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
Synopsis: Cirrus Clouds is a collection of travel poetry with a human justice focus. The Caribbean poet, Derek Walcott (1992 Nobel Prize for Literature), has spoken often of wisps of cirrus clouds high in the sky as carriers of ideas and understandings of the world, drifting from place to place. Gill Hague's collection grows out of this metaphor of clouds transporting real-life experiences from countries around the world including India, Brazil, and Greece, Malaysia, the US, Uganda, South Africa and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The poems are based on commitment to social justice and progressive change, to women's and human rights, and are published by Tangent Books in association with the women's poetry platform, Rive Gauche. 'Gill has had an internationally important role documenting issues of domestic violence against women, which serve to underpin ongoing campaigns for social equality. She has travelled the globe to publicise, support and further this crucial cause. Reading this varied collection, it is clear she has found it both humbling and inspiring to meet with so many people struggling to end social inequality, or directly experiencing it in their lives. These poems celebrate women, men, and young people, and the places and practices they have created in different parts of the globe. Here their daily heroism is acknowledged and honoured.'
