Adam Buck was the quintessential Regency artist. His many portraits of sailors, clergymen, landowners and their families will strike a chord with readers of Jane Austen's novels. Collectors of ceramics and watercolours are familiar with his name and print collectors know the superbly executed colour prints based on his compositions. But, surprisingly, this is the first book ever published on his life and work. To those who are familiar with his popular images of mothers and children, it will come as a surprise to know that he was an Irish radical with links to British political activists and that he became involved in one of the most sensational royal scandals of the period. He also passionately admired Greek art and the decorative elegance of Greek vase painting was always in his mind when he composed his prints and watercolours. It is this that makes his work so distinctive. This extensively illustrated book will appeal to many who already know his art but is also sure to delight the many more who don't. |
