| Synopsis: |
Hoa Nguyen and the poet Dale Smith have published the acclaimed poetry journal Skanky Possum since 1998. Nguyen has cultivated a fiercely loyal audience over decades spent being a poet in very community-driven and hands-on ways: through establishing and taking part in journals (such as Skanky Possum), readings and reading series, teaching, and poetic activism. She is also an active blogger. Nguyen's poetry tends to get taught in undergraduate and graduate school writing programs around the country. Though she is a recent transplant to Canada, these poems were written primarily in Austin, TX. This book may provide an opening to gain a wider readership in Canada, while frequent teaching and reading engagements in the US will maintain her American fan base. Her audience ranges from the young poets she teaches to those in the generation preceding her. From her introduction at The Poetry Project reading in November, 2011: "Hoa shares such a streetwise feminism, keeping the edge and making it something you can dance to, making decisions 'from and of the body, issuing from the percussive of the heart, and informed by the unruly twists of experience and urgency'.(HN)" |
