Description: |
This volume is devoted to the variety of pre-German languages and literatures in the Frankish empire. |
Synopsis: |
"Theodisca lingua" was the label attached in the Early Middle Ages to any Germanic vernacular to distinguish it from Latin and its derivatives, the European Romance national languages. German, which did not yet exist as such, grew out of these "theodisc" vernaculars. The present volume is devoted to the variety of those pre-German languages and literatures in the Frankish empire. The authors follow latest research in the tension between Latin and vernacular, orality and scriptoriality, and seek to determine the pragmatic interdependency of peoples, "tribes" and languages. They survey structures of language, vocabulary and meanings, excavate buried genres of earliest poetry (heroic lays, lyric poetry), recon-struct literature's position between the secular and the profane, between the world of the monasteries and the royal courts. |
