Dieser Band ist ein wichtiges Dokument uber die Entstehungsgeschichte der Lie-Algebren: Wilhelm Killing (1847 - 1923) hatte als erster die endlich dimensionalen halb-einfachen Lie-Algebren klassifiziert. Im Jahr 1885 beginnt Killing auf Vermittlung von Felix Klein einen Briefwechsel mit Friedrich Engel, der langjahriger Mitarbeiter von Sophus Lie war. Diese Briefe, die zum Teil in der Handschriftenabteilung der UB Munster, zum Teil im Archiv des Mathematischen Instituts der Universitat Giessen liegen, legen ein beeindruckendes Zeugnis davon ab, wie sich die Ideen von Killing entwickelt haben (unabhangig von Lie, dessen Zugang zur Theorie der heute sogenannten Lie-Gruppen vollig verschieden zu dem von Killing war). Dieser Band enthalt eine ausfuhrliche Einleitung zum Leben und Werk Killings. Die Briefe sind mit Anmerkungen in Form von Fussnoten versehen. Ausserdem wurden stichwortartige Randbemerkungen angebracht, um dem Leser das Auffinden ihn interessierender Stellen zu erleichtern. |
