Das vorliegende Buch besteht im wesentlichen aus zwei Teilen, die aus verschiede nen Anlassen entstanden sind und die sich an verschiedene Interessenten wenden. Der erste Teil, bestehend aus Kapitel I und 11, enthalt die klassischen Bestandteile der Approximation im Komplexen. Hier kommen die mehr konstruktiven Ge sichtspunkte zur Darstellung: Die Approximation einer Funktion durch Reihen entwicklung (nach Orthogonalpolynomen oder nach Faber-Polynomen) sowie durch Interpolation. Grundlage hierfur war eine einsemestrige Vorlesung, die ich mehrfach in Giessen abgehalten habe. Der zweite Teil, bestehend aus Kapitel III und IV, ging aus Vortragen hervor, die ich an lasslich einer Lerntagung in Oberwolfach zum Thema, Approximation im Komplexen' und bei kurzen Gastaufenthalten in Stockholm und Pasadena gehal ten habe. Ihr Inhalt sollte einen Uberblick geben uber wichtige Entwicklungen seit dem Satz von Mergelyan. Hier handelt es sich zunachst um allgemeine Satze uber Approximation auf kompakten Mengen durch Polynome und rationale Funktionen.
