1m Friihling 1988 erschien der erste Band der Korrespondenz von Johann Bernoulli mit Pierre Varignon, betreut durch Pierre Costabel und Jeanne Peiffer. P. Costabel erlebte noch das Erscheinen des ersten Bandes und den Beginn der Drucklegung des zweiten, ehe er dahingerafft wurde. Wir mochten hier ab drucken, was wir im letzten Jahresbericht des Kuratoriums der Otto Spiess Stiftung schrieben: -Les relations de l'Edition Bernoulli avec Pierre Costabel remontent a plus de 50 ans comme il s'est plu a Ie rappeler lui-meme dans Ie Au Lecteur sur lequel s'ouvre Ie premier volume de la correspondance echan gee par Pierre Varignon et Johann Bernoulli: "Le 23 aout 1939, un an apn!s la signature a Bale du contrat qui me liait a la Commission Bernoulli pour la correspondance de Jean I avec Pierre Varignon, Ie hasard me mit en presence d'Otto Spiess sur Ie quai d'une gare de Normandie. Nous changions de train l'un et l'autre, dans des directions opposees. Lui pour gagner St-Malo et poursuivre sa recherche des pa piers de Maupertuis, moi pour rejoindre mon poste d'officier de tir dans une batterie antiaerienne. Nous eumes seulement Ie temps de nous pro mettre fideIite. C'est dans Ie cadre de ces promesses qu'apn!s la guerre, Otto Spiess n'a cesse de me fournir informations et avis.
