Description: |
This title looks at the mechanics of city life from a different perspective. First it goes 50 metres above ground, to look at the life of people living or working in the high rise and those in helicopters or areoplanes. Then it travels underground to discover trains, tunnels, pipes and cables. |
Synopsis: |
"City Levels" slices through the urban environment at a number of different levels. At street level, the mechanics of city life are familiar, but a cross-section taken fifty meters in the air shows another city: people living in high-rise blocks or working in offices; thousands of passengers travelling in helicopters and airplanes. Below ground, trains, secret tunnels, pipes and cables form unseen, intricate networks. Even rivers and animal life exists underground. The increasing value of land and the rise of the post-industrial city as a place of consumption rather than production are creating both an economic and political drive towards taller buildings and deeper underground excavations. |
