Synopsis: |
Erich Nelson (1897 1980) dedicated his life to the study of the form of plants, in particular orchids. This present work comprises a text volume and the previously unpublished illustrations of the genus Orchis (around 80 plant portraits in their original size on 44 plates of 280 x 375 mm format). The highest quality of reproduction has been strived for in order to depict the undiminished beauty of the water-colours for which Nelson's earlier works are renowned. The plates are loose and kept together in a sturdy box. The text volume contains appraisals of Nelson's complete works written by botanists in English and German. They shed light on the history of biological thought and research in the twentieth century. Nelson occupies a significant position in this field, given his anticipation of concepts that are relevant today. His research, which was based on intensive observation of form and was conducted with an analytical mind, led him to record the shapes of the flowers and their evolution in every detail. The link with current systematic research is established in the accompanying text volume in the form of a detailed guide to the latest molecular genetic findings. These call for the allocation of the previous Orchis species into three genera originating from different roots. |
