A crucial turning point of World War II, the German airforce's 1940 campaign against Britain was the first campaign to have been entirely carried out by aircraft. It pitched the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E and the Bf 110C against the British Hurricane Mk 1 and the Spitfire Mk 1.
