Synopsis: |
The reflected image has fascinated Roy Lichtenstein throughout his career, and an exhibition in Rome last year was dedicated to this theme in his work. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein was interested chiefly in capturing the ephemeral character of the image, or in subverting its real nature through the use of materials like enamel and Rowlux paper. During the 1970s he moved from an image that already existed to an abstract form and, in doing so, forced observers to recreate the image of a mirror in their own minds by means of a series of abstract colours and forms. By the 1980s his reflections were already those of a mature artist who was looking back at his own past, confirming the notion that everything in art and life is simply a collection of reflections and illusions. |
